Asbestos Exposure Risk of Mesothelioma
Asbestos used to be heavily used in the building,
construction, shipbuilding, railroad, and automotive
industries so these workers have had the most
asbestos exposure and risk of developing mesothelioma.
Eighty percent of mesothelioma patients have been
male, which can be attributed to the industries
that have had high asbestos
exposure. These industries, consisting mainly
of men, increased the chances to developing mesothelioma
because any type of toxic mineral, especially
asbestos exposure, increases a persons
chance of developing mesothelioma.
While there is only a one percent chance of contracting
mesothelioma from a family member there have been
many cases of wives coming in contact with asbestos
dust from their husbands shoes or clothing,
etc. and developing mesothelioma. Background asbestos
exposure that results in mesothelioma is considered
unknown exposure that the individual had with
asbestos. While smoking does
not appear to make the risk of mesothelioma greater
the combination of smoking and asbestos exposure
greatly increases the risk of developing cancer
in the air passageways of the lungs.
Good information to consider when determining
your risk of mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure
is:
- Possible exposure to asbestos or inhaled asbestos
fibers in the workplace, home, or other environments
- Length of asbestos exposure
- Time of asbestos exposure
- Safety precautions, like wearing a mask while
working with asbestos
- If you are a smoker
