Mesothelioma is a deadly and rare form of cancer
that is caused by exposure to asbestos. A high
number of workers were exposed to asbestos, a
deadly toxin that had no previous effective mesothelioma
treatment for those affected. Although researchers
continue to search for an effective mesothelioma
treatment, there has yet to be a major breakthrough.
A high number of people have died and suffered
the serious consequences of asbestos exposure,
and while some mesothelioma treatments have extended
the life expectancy of some, the average survival
after being diagnosed is just 18 months.
Approximately 300,000 workers have died because
of asbestos exposure,
and it is predicted that just as many will die
in the next 30-40 years. A new experimental drug
called Altima was created as a mesothelioma treatment
primarily. Shown to lengthen the lives of mesothelioma
patients in earlier studies, the mesothelioma
treatment has great hopes for increasing life
satisfaction for mesothelioma patients. The FDA
now allows Altima to be used for free on a compassionate
mesothelioma treatment basis for 600 patients
as the only approved mesothelioma drug in the
U.S.
